Using creativity to support wellbeing, confidence and community connection

Swiss Cottage Library hosts Arts for Dementia, a long‑running partnership that brings high‑quality creative programmes to residents living with dementia and their carers. Each 10‑week series is delivered by specialist arts organisations and takes place in the library’s spacious, dementia‑friendly community rooms—offering a trusted, familiar environment that encourages people to take part.

Participants enjoy hands‑on arts activities led at a gentle pace, from clay and craft workshops to drama and storytelling. The current programme, created with Park Theatre, introduces vocal warm‑ups, improvisation and playful character‑building, helping attendees explore self‑expression and creativity in a relaxed group setting.

Impact

This project is making a significant difference in people’s lives. Weekly sessions support:

  • Improved wellbeing through creative expression, cognitive stimulation and gentle skill‑building.
  • Reduced isolation, with 15–20 participants regularly meeting, socialising and forming new friendships.
  • Increased confidence, as attendees discover new abilities in a safe and supportive space.
  • Better support for carers, who benefit from shared experience, respite, and connection.

The partnership also strengthens Camden’s wider cultural ecosystem, bringing together Arts for Dementia, local arts organisations, and the library service to deliver community‑centred, inclusive cultural programming

The library provides an accessible, reliable venue with dementia‑friendly features, step‑free access, hearing loop facilities and welcoming staff. Its central location and trusted reputation make it an ideal setting for residents who may experience anxiety or memory concerns.

This collaboration has run successfully for two years, helping Swiss Cottage Library deepen its understanding of dementia‑friendly design and continue improving accessibility for all. It also demonstrates the vital role libraries play in health and wellbeing—offering free, high‑quality community space that enables life‑enhancing programmes to thrive.
