Deptford Library Cinema Club is one of Lewisham’s most vibrant cultural success stories—a free, welcoming film community built inside the heart of a public library. Launched in 2023, the club set out to bring cinema back to a borough that had long been without one, offering residents a place to discover great films, meet new people, and share conversations inspired by culture.

What began as small afternoon screenings has grown into a thriving, multi‑strand programme. Weekly themed screenings, monthly discussion groups and Friday afternoon sessions co‑hosted with The Albany’s Meet Me At group now attract a loyal audience. Quarterly “Films in the Foyer” events regularly reach capacity, while collaborations with organisations such as Stims Collective and the London Science Fiction Research Community have brought even richer, more diverse programming to Deptford.

At the heart of the club is a commitment to community. Subscribers vote on the monthly film selections, contribute ideas, and many even introduce screenings themselves. This shared ownership has built a warm, intergenerational space where older residents, vulnerable adults, students and creative professionals come together—often discovering films they would never otherwise encounter, all for free.

The Cinema Club has also proven to be a powerful way of reimagining what libraries can be. Many attendees report they had no idea libraries offered film events; now, hundreds engage every month through screenings, conversations and a newsletter with more than 800 subscribers. Above all, the club has created an accessible cultural hub in a welcoming, inclusive environment—showing just how much creativity and connection can flourish when communities gather in their local library.
