Merton Libraries have reimagined what a modern public library can be by creating vibrant Health and Wellbeing Zones in all seven libraries as part of the borough’s Mindspace project. These welcoming spaces bring together curated information, specialist health‑monitoring equipment and inclusive activities, making wellbeing support part of everyday life for local residents.
Since launching in 2022, the Zones have become trusted, stigma‑free places where people can learn about their health, monitor key indicators, relax, and connect with others. Depending on the library, residents can access massage chairs for stress relief, check their blood pressure, BMI and weight on free health monitors, browse tailored wellbeing collections, and take part in events focused on movement, mindfulness and healthy living.
Partnership working is central to the project’s success. Merton Libraries teamed up with Nuffield Health to offer free exercise classes, expert health talks, digital wellbeing tools and online support, significantly broadening the offer available through the library service and helping people build healthier routines.
The Mindspace approach is rooted in prevention, connection and accessibility. By placing health resources within familiar, everyday spaces, the project reaches people who may not seek help elsewhere and offers early support before issues escalate. It strengthens community wellbeing, tackles isolation, and empowers residents to take more control of their mental and physical health.
The impact has been remarkable. Since 2022, Merton’s health monitors have been used over 20,000 times, and the service has delivered more than 5,000 health and wellbeing activities, from relaxation workshops to fitness sessions. Feedback captured through Bouncepad touchscreen kiosks — simple, stand‑alone tablets used for gathering quick on‑site user feedback shows that people feel more informed, more confident and more supported.
Merton’s Health and Wellbeing Zones champion the unique role libraries can play in public health, turning trusted local spaces into accessible wellbeing hubs that help communities live healthier, happier lives.
