Merton Libraries – an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation, is transforming library spaces into vibrant cultural hubs, bringing high‑quality arts, literature and creative experiences directly to local communities.
Through their Artists Work in Libraries, local artists are commissioned to create bold, participatory work right in library spaces. Performances, exhibitions, hands‑on workshops and community‑led projects invite residents to get involved in creative ways that feel welcoming, informal and genuinely local.
To promote reading, Merton Libraries Literary Programme, delivered in partnership withWimbledon BookFest, offers author events, writing workshops and The Merton Big Read – an annual shared‑reading initiative that brings the borough together around a single book.
With a strong focus on the east of the borough, where barriers to cultural access are highest, the programme champions inclusion and representation. Activities explore themes such as identity, wellbeing, LGBTQ+ voices, Black history and environmental sustainability rooted in community need and delivered in trusted library spaces.
In just three years, the programme has:
It’s strengthened Merton’s creative economy, built community connection and opened up cultural participation for people who may never have engaged before.
Merton’s Culture & Creativity programme shows how libraries can be powerful cultural engines-places where creativity thrives, communities meet and everyone can access high‑quality cultural experiences close to home.
