Merton Libraries has transformed every children’s library in the borough into a vibrant, immersive Sensory Library, ensuring children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) can engage with books, play, and learning in ways that feel comfortable, joyful, and tailored to their needs.
Originally developed through Arts Council England funding, the project reimagined traditional library spaces as themed sensory environments – from Arctic landscapes and deep‑sea worlds to jungle adventures and outer space. These spaces incorporate tactile elements, gentle sounds, sensory play, and adaptable lighting to support children who may find conventional library settings overwhelming.
