Downham Library is home to a growing programme of SEND Families Sessions, offering children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and their families, a relaxed, sensory‑friendly space to play, create and connect.

Held monthly and free to attend, each session features sensory story times, hands‑on activities, creative play trays and the highly popular Signs & Symbols Disco, where music, movement and Makaton‑inspired actions come together in a joyful, accessible celebration.

“I’m so happy the session is in Downham. My daughter is very excited when we’re coming here.” – Parent

The sessions were shaped in response to a recognised gap in disability‑focused weekend activities in Lewisham. The quieter Saturday afternoon setting and the availability of a sensory break‑out room offer families a calmer alternative to busy library periods, making the space feel more welcoming for those who can find crowded environments challenging.

More than 100 attendees have taken part to date. Parents have spoken about discovering new accessible resources—from dyslexia‑friendly books to Voxblocks—as well as the chance to meet other SEND families and share information in an informal, supportive setting.

It’s lovely to have a space where my child can join in without pressure.” – Parent

The programme has also created opportunities for staff to bring their creativity, lived experience and specialist knowledge into the sessions, helping shape activities that feel genuinely responsive to the families attending.

With further developments planned—including sensory storytimes, cinematic storytelling and new partnership work—the sessions are continuing to grow as a valued part of community life in Downham.
